AFTER NATURE

We live in a time of paradox: even though we know that climate change is disturbing the patterns of nature we often do not see the effects in our everyday lives.
In my current work I use images of trash to indicate the changes in nature that are taking place around us. For years I have collected pieces of plastic, plant material, metal and wood, old iron, stones, shells, bones - anything and everything that looks useful for my work. I use this material in photograms and drawings to depict landscapes altered by human activity and climate change.

In the photograms, OFF SHORE–2, floating detritus in the ocean has replaced sea life, but strangely mimics it at the same time.

In STRANGE WEATHER, nine photograms present the night sky where satellites, probes, and space junk orbit the earth beyond our view. The composition is tied together by a weather map.

In ANIMAL, VEGETABLE, MINERAL, PLASTIC, a drawing on Mylar, life forms and trash have started to combine. While floating along in ocean currents plastic breaks down into tiny fragments that ultimately enter the biological chain.

In the drawings, AFTER NATURE-1 and 2, material culture has overwhelmed nature. Our landscape is layered with history and rubbish. Is this an end or a beginning? What happens after we use up the land with atomic testing, mass agriculture, urban decay, and war?
